Buying and Selling at Auction

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Miriam Tucker of Rago Art and Auction Center located in Lambertville, NJ, just across the bridge from Bucks County.

Have you ever watched Antiques Roadshow on PBS?  If so, you may have seen owners David Rago and Suzanne Perrault  appearing as a guest appraisers on the show.  The husband and wife business team  have been holding auctions since early 1995.

David began his career as a dealer in early 20th century property when he was 16 or 17 years old and went on to a thriving business in early American Art pottery and early 20th century decorative arts.  He and Suzanne met in New York and began working together and holding auctions in New York City.

David is originally from this area, and when he heard the old hosiery factory became available in Lambertville, he bought it in early ’95 and began holding auctions there.

Miriam joined Rago’s in ’99 as their marketing, management and internet solutions person.  She became a partner a few years later.  She has charge of sales of fine arts and silver and jewelry and estate goods, as well as appraisals.  David and Suzanne run the 20th century Design Department they began.

Miriam grew up in the Chestnut Hill area and now lives in Solebury with her husband and dog from LuLu’s Rescue along with a cat.  Lulu’s Rescue is an organization that brings dogs up to our area from the south and finds them good homes, like Miriam’s.   If anyone would love to find a wonderful dog to adopt or serve as a foster family in the area, please contact Michele Armstrong at Flip Dog Yoga.  (Flip Dog Yoga is also a contributor of the Bucks County Women’s Journal – they are on the cover of the April/May issue!)

Miriam’s favorite part of what she does at Rago’s (besides meeting people) is the theatricality of it, as she used to be in theatre.  Putting on an auction is very much like putting on a show – you open, people like you or not; buy or don’t buy.  But I think you’ll agree that once you visit Rago’s, you’ll LOVE them!

Rago’s says that people needn’t be intimidated by auctions – they LOVE having people looking around, sitting in on auctions; anything that they are interested in selling – they are always happy to give opinions as to whether an item suitable for auction.

Rago’s holds auctions from September through June.  They have free walk-in appraisal days on Mondays and employ around 35 people.

Miriam has been involved locally with the Mercer Museum, Bucks County Historical Society and Young Audiences of NJ and Eastern PA.  She currently gives her time to Lulu’s Rescue and the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.

Death and Funerals

It’s a reality – the funeral industry provides a service that no one really wants but is completely necessary!

Definitely not a favorite conversation of most people, but putting off talking about your wishes when you pass will only end up hurting the ones you love.  You have always been there to protect your family throughout your life, why not after your death?

In comes Elena, Supervisor of Stillman’s Memorial Chapel in Trevose.  Elena felt there was a niche for a funeral home that would serve the entire community.  She encourages people to meet their funeral director before they actually need him or her – it helps people feel more comfortable dealing with someone they know at such a difficult time.

Elena has been in funeral service for four years; she doesn’t have any family in the industry, but felt it was more of a calling for her.  She is an independent funeral director, and about a year and a half ago she became  a supervisor for Stillman’s, a state of the art facility.  They offer everything from traditional funerals to cremation; she also does in-home consultations and arrangements to help the family feel more comfortable with such important issues.

Also, Stillman’s Memorial Chapel is certified by the Green Burial Council which is an independent, tax-exempt, nonprofit organization working to encourage environmentally sustainable death care and the use of burial as a new means of protecting natural areas.

What is green burial?

Green burial is a way of caring for the deceased with minimal environmental impact that furthers legitimate ecological aims such as the conservation of natural resources, reduction of carbon emissions, protection of worker health, and the restoration and/or preservation of habitat.

Read more about green burials in our April/May issue of the Bucks County Womens Journal and feel free to contact Elena at 215-324-8800.

Elena lives in New Hope with her golden doodle who is a Canine good citizen at Chandler Hall in Newtown, PA.  She is a member of the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors’ Assoc (PFDA), the Rotary Club, the Green Burial Council, Upper Makefield Business Association and Feasterville Business Association.

Pilates – You Know You Love It!

Flip Dog Pilates

“Imagine an exercise program that keeps you wanting more – something that you look forward to and provides you with a sense of accomplishment.”  BCWJ, p. 12

That would definitely work for me and every girlfriend I know!  Vicki Cross of Flip Dog Pilates wants to help every achieve their goals, increase strength and stamina and rehabilitate any injuries that you may have had.  Pilates can do that!

Flip Dog is 7-1/2 years old and Vicki was the director there before she bought it a year and a half ago.

Vicki has been in the industry for 20 years; she teaches pilates and spinning at the YMCA, always dreaming that some day she would own her own studio.  When her last child went to college and the former owner of Flip Dog wanted to sell, the opportunity was right for her and she grabbed it!

At Flip Dog they use a machine called the IM=X Pilates Reformer which updates the authentic pilates method developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920′s.  With the machine there is a more athletic and vigorous approach to pilates – not only doing the strengthening and core/stretching, but increasing the flexibility and strength for the entire body through a series of precise, graceful and controlled movements.

What can Just One Seed do?

Are you amazed that you can place a tiny little seed in the ground and water it and it becomes a plant that can provide you food to eat?  That has always filled me with wonder and amazement.

And that is how Eve Minson came up with her company – JustOneSeed.com.  Eve is a landscape architect and a horticulturist – and growing plants for food is her passion.  We all know that eating healthy starts with eating locally and seasonally.  Sustainable farming starts with educated consumers supporting our local farm markets who, in turn, sell local produce from local farmers.  Not only is the food more delicious because it’s seasonal, but you are helping reduce your carbon footprint!
Eve grew up in downtown New York City with a summer home in the Catskills.  It was there that she became a nature lover and found she has a major connection to and with nature.  She has been a grower for 25 years and even had a business in Ithaca where she did custom growing for clients including design.

In 2003 she moved to Bucks County to teach sustainable landscape design at Del Val College.  She currently lives in  upper Bucks County on a horse farm with her horse of 30 years and lots of pets.

What does she want to do with JustOneSeed.com?  She wants to grow gardeners and healthy food.  Through her work she has seen how eating healthy and gardening changes people –– it means the world to her to see  how people transform as they become gardeners.  She lives on property that runs a commercial horse-boarding operation which is solar and off the grid – on land in conservation.  Right next door their neighbor raises organic livestock.  And that is where she has made a beautiful space for people to learn.
While she was at Del Val College she was involved in community–based design projects with students, and she is a former Board member of the Audubon Society.

What Eve is doing for other people is life-affirming – check it out.  You can call Eve at 267-614-3695, email her, or check out her website for more information and workshop schedule.

Survey Says … Communicate!

Ever feel like you’re in a relationship with someone  and you just can’t communicate?  With over 20 years’ experience in counseling, Bill Montgomery,  licensed marriage and family therapist, relationship specialist, is the man to help you figure out how to best communicate.  (William L. Montgomery, PhD-Systems; MA-MFT; CGT)

Having grown up in Pittsburgh, Bill moved to Bucks County in ’97 from New Jersey with his wife and their four daughters, where he still lives today with his wife and his labradoodle, Jessa Doodle.

(book available at Amazon.com)

Before March of 2010 when he started his own business, he worked with two organizations – the Council for Relationships and the Lenape Foundation.  The Council for Relationships is a fairly well known organization in the Philly area and is the oldest marriage and therapy organization in the US, founded in 1932.  He was an outpatient therapist for the Lenape Foundation for many years as well.

When an office became available in the same building, he saw his chance to start his own business and just went for it.

Bill went to college to be an electrical engineer and has a doctorate; however, he’ll be the first to tell you he was just bad at it, saying “If he built it, you shouldn’t plug it in.”

There’s not such a far difference between counseling and engineering, he told me.  He likes to think about how things work together – a system.  And that’s what a family is – a system.  He feels that if someone is in a relationship with someone, he looks at all sides of what’s affecting the relationship – just as you would an engineering problem.  That’s why he got certified in Gestalt therapy – the effective emotions on the “whole person” 25 years ago.

It was very apparent to me that Bill is very passionate about what he does and really can’t imagine doing anything else.  That’s what I’d want in a therapist!

Bill’s a member of the PA Psychological Association and is always working toward better healthcare treatment for those who need emotional or relationship care.  He’s also a member of the PA Marriage and Family Association and is located at 16 N Franklin St, Suite 201B, Doylestown, PA.

What a guy!

Feel free to call Bill at 215-489-0826, or email him!

WomenMove – A Statement, A Belief, A Call to Action

Strength. Self-worth.  Equality. That is what every woman deserves; that is what WomenMove can give her.

Lurainya Koerber, Founder/Director of WomenMove, Inc., knew long ago that she needed to make a difference.  “I also know that in order for the world to be a better place, women need to be able to stand up, and stand together. But not all of them can…yet,” Lurainya says.

The signature program of WomenMove is a large-scale, dance-theater production, called Nectar of the Moon™. Dance can speak volumes with a single movement; but when you add synchronized performers in beautiful costumes, pulsing rhythms that beat to your core, fantastical scenery, and the sense of connection that comes only from being in a live audience – it’s a very powerful experience, and delivers a clear message.

What is the message in Nectar of the Moon? That we are all connected; that every woman is strong, worthy, and equal, regardless of the culture or situation into which she was born.

The production is inspired by different styles of world dance (African, Indian, Middle Eastern, Spanish, Tahitian, etc.), and the knowledge that styles dating back to antiquity have similar movements, many with elements celebrating the stages of a woman’s life, Nectar of the Moon transcends time and space.

 Save the date:  11-11-11

Lurainya grew up in Bucks County and currently lives in Willow Grove with her husband.
